Marathon

A marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers, or 26.219 miles. It typically takes place on roads, but can also be held on trails. Marathons are widely recognized as both a competitive sport and a popular recreational activity, attracting runners of varying skill levels, from elite athletes to casual participants. The event originated in ancient Greece, commemorating the legendary run of the messenger Pheidippides, who allegedly ran from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to deliver news of victory over the Persians. Modern marathons are frequently organized as charitable events, with many participants raising funds for various causes. The marathon has various formats, including standard marathons, half-marathons (13.1 miles), and ultramarathons, which extend beyond the marathon distance. Participants often train for months to prepare for the physical and mental demands of completing the race.
